To say I’m a little obsessed with this studio is a MAJOR understatement!
Name: Mr. Boddington’s Studio
Location: New York City (118 East 28th to be exact)
What do you do?: We are old world stationers
What is your aesthetic? A lot of cha cha cha goes along with Mr. Boddington’s design. Some days he adores hand-drawn graphics dipped in bright cheery colors, other days he is fixated on vintage Shanghai tea-room wallpaper. Today he wants everything to be in a black, marigold and india (a muted Tiffany’s blue) color story. Regardless, there always tends to be a historic wink to his work.
How does your studio style convey your professional aesthetic? Weddings are one of the last ceremonial celebrations in our culture. Thank goodness we were clever enough to hold onto them! It is our job to create wedding correspondence that make our brides giddy with delight. To get there, we do a lot of listening to our clients. Somewhere in their vision always lies the perfect idea for paper.
Favorite part of your studio? There is a culture here beyond stationery. Last week, our production director and a designer had a bake off… they each made these spectacular peach tarts and the rest of the team voted a winner (it was actually a tie). I love that the staff gets a kick out of one another beyond their working day.
Where do you go for inspiration? I just had a baby boy and have been rereading some classic children’s books. I am finding some masterful illustration among the 1960s set… M. Sasek, Jean de Brunhoff and HA Rey. That darling Babar puts me over the moon.
What tool do you use in your business that you can’t live without? I would answer I CAN live without FaceBook but people keep telling me it is a necessity. Okay, so I will trust them. I would say that we cannot live without music or the radio (NPR). We are a whistle-while-you-work kinda studio.
Is there anything you’d upgrade to? Carrying a mobile phone is an upgrade for me. I am weepy for the days when there was one landline in the kitchen, call waiting and my mother always answered the line. It’s not that I am old, just that I enjoy being out of touch a little bit.
Anything else we should know? Mr. Boddington was my imaginary friend as a tot…. shhhh!
