The New Modern: Garden Tablescape

Yes, we are still bundled in our winter clothes and it seems hard to imagine but spring is on the way. To help usher it in we created a garden tabletop inspired design. March is a great time of year to refresh your house plants. I know I am always wanting to get my hands full of soil around now. So I grabbed some bulb plants, ferns, moss and baby tears and arranged in clear glass and terra cotta. I like the idea of combining centerpieces with finger foods and condiments, making one harmonious tablescape. Simple linen napkins add some refined texture.. I had a garden postcard hanging around so we used it as a table number. Regular seed packets from your local  hardware store or garden center would work just as nicely. Oh spring, you can not come soon enough! Enjoy – Denise

The New Modern: Winter White

Hello and happy winter! The temperature outside has dropped and the days are now short. Winter has arrived and it’s time to cozy up. Now, there is a lot of inspiration out there for winter tablescapes, ranging from the traditional to the kitsch and they all have there place. But for our December table -  I thought let’s keep it simple and white with lots of candle light. Mounds of fake snow hide the floral foam that anchors the flocked branches. Simple arrangements of dusty miller and eucalyptus bring some blue gray color to the design. Adrienne found these great ikat plates so we had some pattern to play with. I think any similar graphic would work. A little bird and pine cone napkin rings add a whimsical touch. Overall a very easy table to create. Wishing everyone a great holiday season! – Denise

The New Modern: Fall Wreath Table

I love wreaths. And this time of year all I want to do is make them. I knew I wanted to feature a flower wreath for our November table so when I spied the most incredibly gorgeous hydrangea at the market, I pounced on it. It came from the state of Tennessee or as they say on 28th Street, “it’s local”.

Instead of placing it on the table or the wall (both of which would work nicely) we had this inspired idea to hang it over head. Image this is your sweet heart table or make a statement by hanging it over an entry table. I like how it feels like some crazy big floral crown for a beautiful woodland giant. We kept the table fairly clean and simple in shades of blue with pops of gold for some glam. I hope you like it. I sure had fun making it. – Denise

The New Modern: Watercolor Inspired

Hello! Here we are in fall and the only real nod to the season I am making is by using these gloriously bright dahlias. Otherwise it’s all about color for this design.  October’s table was directly inspired by this awesome letterpress wedding invitation suite designed by Printerette Press. How fun are they!? I have Adrienne to thank for spotting them. Once I saw them, I took my paints out and starting splattering and dripping!  This is a super easy table to create. We kept it white with pops of color for a fresh fun look. Ripped up and painted tissue paper was placed over clear twinkle lights and simply strung on the back wall for interest. Cake pops created with a yellow paint swoosh by Lolly Love and rock candy from Economy Candy sweeten the scene. And as always beautifully photographed by Tory.  Hope you enjoy! – Denise

The New Modern: Chic Picnic Wedding

I thought it fitting to end summer with a modern take on a picnic inspired wedding. I originally wanted to use flowering plants for the centerpieces.  I still think geraniums would look super cute. But then I spied theses snappy zinnias and couldn’t resist. You could even use sunflowers, which also signal late summer. The key is to use one variety of flower and pack them together for visual impact. I felt it was import to add some black to the table to make it pop and not come off as overly sweet. Adrienne at Bespoke Affairs had the brilliant idea of using the red folding chair. Often couples think to choose a colored napkin to bring interest to the table but now I’ve become a bit obsessed with doing a colored chair as well. It would look amazing in white airy tent or loft space.

The treasure trove of goodness that is Etsy provided the lovely paper goods. I’ve always loved the look of white lettering on black paper. The fun and whimsical designs by Ello There completely fit the bill. I actually first became aware of Bambirdy’s work on Brooklyn Bride. Instantly I knew their irresistible mini banners would make a perfect detail. And of course no picnic would be complete without pie. I remember years ago I was a guest at a wedding where instead of serving a wedding cake they had a gorgeous table of homemade pies. Brooklyn Pie shop, Five and Twenty Black Birds provided the most scrumptious pies for our photo shoot. I can personally attest to their supreme deliciousness.

Have a great end of summer. I’m looking forward to sharing fall and winter inspirations! – Denise
