Lisa sent me these photos of her very cool wedding and I was more than happy to share them with all of you! I thought we’d start with the super cool invitations and then cover the event later in the day. She’s done a very thorough writeup, so I’ll leave it to her. More photos at 1pm!
Todd and I wanted a wedding that was fun and would incorporate elements that were especially meaningful to both of us — creativity, humor, a sense of intimacy, and as many friends and family as we could squeeze into one space. We had guests of many different backgrounds and ages, and we wanted them all to enjoy themselves and be comfortable while still honoring our own personal values and tastes. We planned the wedding ourselves, rather blindly, which was occasionally tough but rewarding. In the end, the event was a mixture of traditional and non-traditional elements, produced by vendors whom we often had a personal (or at least local) connection, which made the whole thing feel like our own planning was assisted by a strong community effort. It was a lot of fun, and even if things had gone less smoothly it would have been impossible not enjoy myself, being surrounded by so many people I like.
VENUE: We chose the Montauk Club in Park Slope, Brooklyn, for its location, and for its lovely vintage details. We both liked that the venue had a lot of character and history, and although there were some very ornate touches, it didn’t feel too fancy or stiff. The club has a warm but forgotten feel to it, like it had been dusted off and restored just in time for our event. We also appreciated that the layout of the venue enabled us to easily hold the ceremony and reception in the same building, and that the majority of our guests would not have to get on a plane just to attend our wedding.
CEREMONY: We asked my father (a minister) to officiate, and co-wrote the ceremony with him. The service was pretty balanced — it reflected our values and paid respects to our interfaith backgrounds. We didn’t have a traditional wedding party, but we asked family members and friends to read passages representing seven blessings that we hope to have in our marriage (such as trust, laughter, friendship, etc.). (The passages ranged from Woody Allen to Sylvia Plath to Gabriel Garcia Marquez.) We each composed love letters to read to one other, and my father wrote a short piece imparting his wisdom to us.
MUSIC: Having good music at our wedding was a huge priority, as music has always held an important place in our lives. Our friend’s bluegrass band played both the processional and recessional; during the processional, when Todd and I walked down the aisle together, they played a beautiful instrumental piece they actually composed specifically for our wedding. For the recessional, they played an instrumental bluegrass version of the song “Melt with You” by Modern English.
There was also a musical interlude during the ceremony, performed by our friends Pete and Anna. Their song, “Momentum”, is one we’ve both loved for years. It was pretty moving to hear Pete and Anna play it for our wedding day, and extra thrill to be able to introduce their music to all our friends and family.
Our friend Sean deejayed our reception, and did a great job keeping people in the middle of the dance floor, with lots of old funk and soul, new wave, etc.
RECEPTION: We had a cocktail hour immediately following the ceremony, and a reception following that. Another great thing about the Montauk Club is that it doesn’t need a lot of extra decoration. Our florist added lots of flowers and candles, we added vintage frames with old family wedding photos in them (one on each guest table), and our invitation designer made cards for the tables — that’s all we really needed. During the reception, people gave great toasts (for this occasion, we were lucky to have some close friends who are also comedy writers); swing danced to a song by the Andrew Sisters; served seasonal food (catered by our venue); and offered guests a candy bar (my new husband is kind of a candy fiend) and a photo booth. When it was finally time to leave the wedding venue, many of us kept the evening going at a nearby bar called Union Hall.
CAKE: We decided to serve multiple cakes in a variety of flavors, from a Red Hook, Brooklyn bakery called Baked. The cakes looked and tasted great, plus it was a surprisingly affordable alternative to a traditional wedding cake. For the cake-cutting ceremony, we had a miniature polka-dotted two-tiered cake (also from Baked), topped with cute little wooden figures that Todd hand-painted in our likenesses.
PHOTO BOOTH: We’d originally planned to rent a traditional photo booth — the kind that prints black and white photo strips — but space constraints required us to find an alternative solution. We settled on digital photobooth from usnaps.com instead. (It was more of a photo ‘pillar,’ rather than a booth, which is how it saved us room.) Usnaps offers several different options for backdrop colors and fabrics, but we chose to provide our own, from a damask fabric we found in the garment district. Even though the sleek-looking, white booth didn’t match the decor of the Montauk Club as well as a traditional booth would have, it turned out to be a better option for us. Because the photos were digital, everyone was able to see and share all of their photo booth pictures almost immediately. Getting the photo booth was one of the best things we did for our wedding; we’re both really glad to have all these extra pictures of our friends and family. Also, it was a lot of fun; our guests were very creative with it. (Even our shy nephew, who covered his face like an angry celebrity whenever our human photographer approached.)
INVITATIONS: Our friend Tim O’Donnell designed our invitations and all our other printed materials for us. We love how all of the elements worked together, and we got a ton of great feedback.
DRESS & SUIT: My dress was made for me at Blue, in East Village. The color was inspired by a dress Michelle Williams once wore to the Oscars; the rest was shaped by Christina (the designer at Blue), my friend Stef, and me, sort of by trial and error. I was really pleased with the end result.
Todd’s English-cut pinstriped suit came from Paul Smith.
ACCESSORIES: I found my necklace at RePop, a vintage furniture store in Brooklyn, and my earrings and bracelet belonged to my great-grandmother. (My grandparents let me keep them as part of my wedding gift.) My veil came from an Etsy shop called Something Bold, and my shoes, which were more than 80 years old, came from ebay for $30. I bought them before I was engaged, and I had no idea when I’d ever wear them.
Todd bought some vintage cufflinks on ebay, but had to ditch them at the last minute (his shirt didn’t accept cufflinks), and he bought some brown cap-toed shoes from Allen-Edmonds.
HAIR & MAKEUP: My friend and longtime hairdresser Luisa (at Fringe Salon in the Lower East Side) did a fantastic job on my hair, and my friend Elizabeth Crockett made my face look its best.
FLOWERS: This was a difficult area for us, as neither of us know much about flowers. We were only certain of the colors we wanted, and that we hoped to include a lot of texture. (Using berries and fruits, and so on). Nicolette Owen did an amazing job. She handed me one of the prettiest bouquets I’ve seen, and she made boutinneres for everyone else associated with the wedding. Normally I don’t feel all that strongly about flowers, either way, but I felt real love for these things. I have no idea how she managed to do all that on her own.
FAVORS: In addition to the photo booth and candy bar, we made mix CDs which were inserted inside recycled cardboard CD sleeves along with the wedding program, so everyone received one at the door before our ceremony. Unfortunately, the venue forgot to leave out the plastic bags we’d purchased for the candy bar, so I guess everyone had to eat the candy on the spot, unless they used their pockets. (These tiny mishaps are the kinds of things that are supposed to freak out brides, I think.)
PHOTOGRAPHY: My online friend and Chicago Tribune photojournalist Candice C. Cusic did a wonderful job and was great to work with. It was nice finally meeting her in person, although I can’t say for sure what her face looks like, other than a Canon SLR camera. She worked tremendously hard and did a fantastic job capturing the day.
VIDEOGRAPHY: We hired a cinematographer named Ed David to shoot our wedding day. His stuff is beautifully shot and very unobtrusive, and we liked getting to know him. We’re excited to see the footage once it’s ready.

How we got into this predicament:
Keith is a history buff and he based the proposal off the old English love ballad Scarborough Fair. It is a ballad about two lovers who ask each other to complete impossible tasks to prove their love before they agree to meet at Scarborough Fair.
Our approach to our wedding:
We wanted our wedding to be fun, casual but elegant, and most of all we wanted it to be very personal with our family and friends celebrating the day with us. It was important to us that everyone be relaxed and have a good time – not be looking at their watches and wondering when it was time to go! We also wanted to design and do a lot of the details ourselves.
We took a lot of time to research and visit a lot of venues. Luckily our friends happened to buy the perfect piece of real estate.
Our friends Bill and Barry had recently bought a small 10 room hunting/fishing hotel on the Delaware River: Beaver-Del Hotel & Campground. We went up to visit their new purchase and fell in love – we found our location! It was built in the 1930s, it’s on the river, and Bill and Barry spent every weekend leading up to the wedding renovating the place. They added a dance hall and a biegarten in the back, and figured out how to run the bar/hotel business. They opened to the public 2 weeks before our wedding – we had the honor of being the first wedding there. We love that the location was a personal one, and we also love that we get to say, “We got hitched at the Big Beaver!”
Once we found the venue it was much easier to envision the day and start working on the decor. We didn’t have a specific color scheme or graphic motif to start with, our aesthetic evolved organically. We wanted a general old timey feeling without getting too period or theatrical. We also wanted natural feeling details that complimented each other vs. ‘these are the invites that match the plates that match the napkins that match the menus that match the centerpieces that echo the silhouette of the wedding dress …. The setting was also so naturally beautiful, we didn’t try to compete!
Our invites were modeled after an old Western Union telegram. We also designed a postcard RSVP so people could write us keepsake note in addition to letting us know if they were attending or not. The postcard saved on envelopes and postage as well. We bought the paper for both and had the telegrams and postcards printed and cut at Kinkos while we waited. We printed the window envelopes ourselves at home.
We opted for non-floral centerpieces – this helped us save the cost of flowers and gave us a fun project to do with friends and family. The materials were: a cross section slice of a tree trunk as the base, topped with candles in varied height glass vases, decorated with trimmings. Keith and I went to his parents’ house one weekend and we cut down a tree from their backyard together. Keith’s dad sliced the trunk for us and these became the homemade bases for our centerpieces. I picked some lace (M & J trimming), leather cord, a few colors of hand-dyed silk ribbon (JKM ribbon) and some cedar wood flowers to decorate the vases. With the help of Keith’s family and friends we got them done in a couple of afternoons.
Keith’s grandma’s homemade jam is unforgettable, and we wanted our wedding favors to be memorable. So we asked if she would make little jars of strawberry jam for our favors, and Keith’s mom if she would make the cookies to eat them with. Another weekend home, we all (us, Keith’s parents, grandparents and one of his cousins) went strawberry picking. Keith’s grandmother took the berries home to make the jam. Keith’s mom bought cookie stamps from Rycraft to stamp the cookies with a pig or a rabbit (our lunar zodiac signs). We got the little baskets at a craft store, ordered the jars, the mini wooden paddles and the paper to wrap the baskets online. I designed the jam jar labels, bought the blank labels at Paper Presentation and printed them at home. Keith’s parents cut the paper, and over the course of a couple afternoons Keith’s mom and her friends finished the wedding favors.
We love movies, especially old ones. So we designed movie tickets for the guests to find their table – they go to the table with the movie poster that matches the movie ticket they were given. We designed the tickets based off images of old movie tickets we found online. We printed the tickets (paper from Paper Presentation) and the mini posters (all movies from the 1920s-30s) at home. While browsing Upper Rust Antiques in the Lower East Side I found an old Belgian creamery crate with sections just big enough to hold all the tickets and make a unique display. The little creamery bottles became vases to cut flowers, which we placed throughout the space.
I wanted the guest book to be something that would be a fun way to remember the day. I saw these beautiful address file cards from Lovely Design and thought that an address file was the perfect solution. I ordered the cards and sent some to my dad so he could make the box that would hold them. Guests wrote their wedding wishes on one side and their info (address, phone, email) on the other. So now when we write a letter and look up the address, we can also remember our wedding day as told by our friends (and admire my dads handiwork!)
I wanted a way to honor our ancestors at the wedding. I gathered wedding photos of all our married relatives, our great grandparents, grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and siblings, and had them printed out at Kinkos. It was a great experience in itself to look through old photos and contact cousins who I hadn’t seen since I was little (Keith’s cousins are all fairly nearby but mine are spread across the globe.) Using decorative cardstock with circle and oval cutters and border punches I made Victorian looking picture frames. We hung these off of tree branches to be featured on the table behind our Mustachio Portrait Station.
Mustachio Portrait Station:
There is a crafting website that I love called Etsy. Browsing on this site one day I came across some fabulous wooden mustaches on a stick from Something’s Hiding in Here. I commissioned 3 custom ones for the wedding, ended up buying 2 more regular ones, and the Mustachio Portrait Station was born. Wooden mustaches! Just saying it makes me smile, and so do the portraits of our mustachioed selves and guests.
Our friends have a marvelous band: The Charismatic Megafauna. They are an old timey sort of acoustic roots band. It’s a family (the parents and their 3 children) and our friend Michael. They learned and arranged a version of Scarborough Fair for our wedding march, and Buddy Holly’s Words of Love for our first dance. They also played during the reception and were a big hit with everyone. We are so glad to know such wonderful and talented people!
Music & DJ:
In the months leading up to the wedding Keith and I started to create a playlist for the wedding, as well as kept our ears open for new songs to add. The technical set up was simple: a laptop and our friend Dave as the DJ (his DJ name is: Your Friend Dave)
We had about 175 guests total and 30 of them were children, most under the age of 6. Keith’s mom put together a little gift bag with toys and treats for each kid to help their parents keep them occupied and interested. Nothing too fancy or expensive, just fun stuff – fake tattoos, Chinese yoyos, and other assorted toys. We also had games for them to play at the reception, a low badminton net, croquet (which no one knew how to play but the kids enjoyed hitting the balls around) and a game where they had to try and drop old wooden clothespins into old glass milk jugs. When it got dark we brought out these flashlighty light spinning toys Keith’s parents found online. We also had a s’mores station by the bonfire for the evening, which was a big hit with kids and adults alike!
The cookie table is a Pittsburgh (Keith’s family is from there) wedding tradition. Relatives and friends bake cookies and bring them to the wedding. All the cookies are displayed on a cookie table (or a few cookie tables) for guests to nibble on throughout the day. Keith’s relatives are pros at this so they started baking months in advance and freezing cookies in order to be able to bring plates and plates of cookies. Our NYC friends also made a good showing of their baking skills!
There is a Japanese tradition of making 1000 origami cranes, called senzaburu. You make the cranes in order to have a wish granted, and for special occasions such as weddings. My mother and grandmother taught me origami when I was little, so this was a good way to put those skills to use! With the help of my mother, my aunts and cousins (they sent theirs from CA!), my sister and our friends here in NYC we made over 1600 origami cranes. It was a great way to bond with my friends (and teach them some origami) in the months before the wedding. My sister got everyone making cranes at my bridal shower, and after that anyone who came to visit or hang out was enlisted to make cranes. Sometimes friends would show up just to fold cranes on their way home from work.
Our families and some friends came a few days early to Beaver-Del to help out. It was 2 solid days of crafting and setting up. We painted signs, strung and hung origami cranes chandelier style in the tent, set up the tables, hung lanterns and decorations.
My dad got creative and strung a few strings of cranes differently than the rest (spaced out vs. stacked tight) and my mom got inspired to make a few larger cranes. These ended up being hung from the trees as the backdrop for the ceremony site.
We put cut flowers, bought at the local grocery store, in various milk bottles and creamery bottles to brighten up tables and bathrooms. We also bought mums in pots from the side of the road to decorate the aisle for the ceremony site.
Wedding Dress & Accessories:
My dress was hemmed but it wasn’t done well (a seamstress in Pittsburgh, NOT Wedding Atelier). Thankfully it was still on the long side so I ended up hemming my dress again by myself. It turned out to be a blessing because I can tell my children and grandchildren that I hemmed my own dress. I also changed the bustle buttons to real shell buttons that I found at Tinsel Trading Company. I look forward to the day that I can pass my dress on to my children or grandchildren.
My wood vine crown was another Etsy find. I had Emily of Which Goose on Etsy make me a custom crown, a plain circle crown with just a few intertwined vines. Once I received it I customized it further by cutting the back open and attaching hand dyed silk ribbons from JKM ribbon to tie it together.
When Keith and I got engaged his mother gave me Keith’s christening bonnet, which was a handkerchief turned into a bonnet by a few well placed ribbons. She told me to keep it and on our wedding day I should snip the ribbons and this would be the handkerchief that I would carry with me down the aisle. It is a lovely tradition that I was happy to be a part of.
Bouquets & Boutonnieres & Corsages:
Sarah Ryhanen of Saipua did the bouquets, boutonnieres and corsages for the bridal party, parents and grandparents. I met with her a couple of times and showed her images that had the soft faded vintage colors I wanted: antique ivory, blush rose, celadon, brown and lavender. We also talked about the mood and theme of the wedding. Sarah got it right away: loose, romantic, woodsy, wildflower style. She used majolica roses, dahlias, jasmine, eucalyptus, ranunculus, hydrangea, tweedia, and astilbe. As a special personal touch she tied the bouquet together with parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme to acknowledge the theme of our engagement.
We asked my brother Yuta if he would officiate our wedding. He gladly accepted and quickly got ordained online. It was great to be joined in marriage by someone so familiar with us, and whom we love so much. I was so proud and honored. His favorite joke the week before the wedding was “I’m going to marry my sister this weekend …”
Since my brother was officiating the wedding, he and his wife helped us with the vows. They sent us suggestions, Keith and I took what we liked, cobbled other bits and pieces together from things we found online, and modified everything to reflect us. Taking the time to edit them together was fun and made the vows more meaningful to us.
We started out DIY and enlisted a lot of our families and many of our friends along the way. It saved us some money, but the real bonus was all the time we got to spend bonding with friends and family while working on these projects together. It is an indescribable feeling to be at your own wedding and see so many details and remember the time spent with loved ones to make them happen. Standing at the ceremony site, hearing our friends’ band, looking at my brother as he married us, seeing the cranes our friends and family folded, being at dinner and seeing the centerpieces and the wedding favors and remembering the day we cut down the tree, and the morning we picked strawberries for the jam. Doing it ourselves and with our loved ones really made the day meaningful to us and everyone there.

Kara and Loop’s wedding has all those quirky details that just makes me wish I had been invited! I love the groomsmens button boutonnieres that Kara made, and the adorable cake topper! Kara lets us in on some more of her day below….
Venue: Once we decided to have our wedding in Los Angeles (we are both from out of town) we knew immediately that we wanted to get married at the Marvimon House (www.marvimon.com). Loop’s company, Tact Event Management, primarily works from there and it was just voted best wedding venue in Los Angeles for 2008 by LA Weekly. Formerly a car showroom, this venue boasts soaring 17 foot ceilings and a private outdoor succulent garden where we had our ceremony. The exposed brick walls and amazing antique furniture fit perfectly with our romantic vintage theme. Huntington Catering, who created our fantastic menu, was able to use the bistro style kitchen and cook most of our dinner right in front of the guests!
Ceremony: Loop and I really wanted our ceremony to engage everyone and bring them into our world. Since music has been a huge part of our lives here in LA that was also an important theme. Almost all of our friends are involved in music in some way, so we not only got to borrow their talents, but also to have them be a part of that spectacular moment. Loop opened the ceremony on his acoustic guitar with Death Cab For Cutie’s ‘Transatlanticism’ and had our friends pitch in on their electric and acoustic guitars, drums, piano, and even a glockenspiel with the wedding party singing me down the aisle. It left everyone in tears! Next, our friend Nic, an accountant by day, got the crowd going with a roast about the two of us. He got the entire crowd rolling in the aisles. I found a really dark yet romantic reading that I had my grandmother read. After we were finally announced Mr. and Mrs. Haro we started up the prelude with tambourines as we exited to the reception.
Reception: Loop and I set out to create this wedding on the smallest budget possible so we worked really hard on designing it ourselves. To cut costs we bought all of our table decor at flea markets. We chose dark teal, deep purple, navy blue and black and basically horded any vase, glass, or plate that we could find. We even managed to find stemless purple, teal, and blue champagne flutes from Crate and Barrel for about $.50 a pop… that’s less than the cost of renting! Of course we had to have a fantastic drink to go in those beautiful glasses so we had our friend Ralph, a true mixologist, come up with some. He came up with the Loop75 (a mix of Jack Daniel’s, homemade sweet and sour, and champagne) and the Lavender Vodkara (we used Monin Lavender Syrup, vodka, and a sprig of fresh lavender). They were such a hit, they had to go to the liquor store twice to refill on liquor! Huntington Catering also supplied us with a soda machine filled with PBR, Pellegrino, and Soda. It was really easy for our guests to be able to serve themselves if they didn’t want to wait in line for a drink.
Because we had family travelling from afar we really wanted to have good old comfort food that reminded us of home to serve our guests. Huntington Catering (www.huntingtoncateringcompany.com) ran with that theme and made us some tasty Gruyere macaroni and cheese, a pork roulade, and citrusey white fish. Because Loop fell in love with pickled herring after our first trip home to Minnesota, we had them create herring crostinis for an appetizer. So delicious! We enlisted a pastry chef who used to work with one of our friends to create our wedding cakes. We wanted 8″ mini cakes for display (on vintage cake stands of course!) and then sheet cakes to serve our guests. Danielle Keene (of Wilshire, BLT Steak, and the Little Door restaurant fame) did a fantastic job whipping up a delicious red velvet, lemon verbena with coconut, and German chocolate cake (an homage to my dad’s birthday which was the same day.) Our friend Liz even made us an adorable cake topper which had mini versions of us dressed exactly as we were! We also served Minnesota Mints (traditionally served at graduations) which are made from cream cheese, confectioner’s sugar, and mint flavoring and then dipped into granulated sugar before being pressed into molds. I swear they are sent from heaven!
Florist: We were lucky enough to have the amazing Holly Flora (www.hollyflora.com) create our beautiful floral displays. We wanted to stay away from the typical floral ‘arrangement’ that are often seen at weddings, so we had her simply fill our vases and glasses with beautiful dahlia’s, black calla lilies, and grasses. I let her run wild with my bouquet and the end result was a orgasmic creation of flowers, complete with feathers and beautiful satin ribbon. The bridesmaids got cute mini versions with teal feathers.
Photographer: We came across our photographer on complete word of mouth- she’d done almost all of our friends weddings! Cathryn (www.cathrynfarnsworth.com) got our look right away, and shot almost 4000 digital and print shots! We had a lot to look through, but she captured spectacular moments without making us pose. Plus, all of the colors came out so rich. The best moment was when we were shooting outside the venue and an ice cream man walked by. Cathryn just went with the flow and got him in the picture, it was one of the best shots of the entire wedding!
Bridesmaids and Groomsmen attire: We didn’t want to make any of our wedding party spend any money since most of them already had to pay for hotel and airfare to make it to the wedding. I let my bridesmaids choose between an adorable sweetheart strapless dress and a 50’s style cocktail dress from Isaac Mizrahi for Target: both were priced at an unbelievable $19.99! I let them wear their own black shoes and then created feather hair pieces for them all to wear. The men wore their own black pants and we found them all matching button downs and great striped cardigans from Forever 21. Instead of boutonnieres, I made hounds tooth fabric covered buttons. Loop bought them all Tom’s shoes as gifts to complete the look.
My Look: I had tried on a few of the traditional big dresses and everything felt too stuffy. I wanted to be comfortable and yet have the look of a 40’s film star. My mom and I found the dress on a whim at Foley and Corinna on Melrose Avenue. The dress was off the rack and needed no alterations! I attempted making my own veil, but finally caved and found a fantastic one at www.etsy.com. I searched forever for the perfect shoe and found ivory patent leather peep toes with rhinestone covered heels from Nina. My good friend Heather did my makeup and completed my screen siren look with fuchsia blush and lipstick.

Audrey and Jesse’s wedding just looks like fun, doesn’t it? I could tell just by those bridesmaids dresses….
Green apples, birds, and twigs all in a chocolate brown/green apple/white color scheme. We had apples everywhere, from the apple colored invitations, apples in each centerpiece, and apple flavored candy. The birds were featured on the cake topper, the stamps on each program, and the candle holder near the guest book. My Mom constructed the tree that held our seating cards, and both my Mom and Dad worked hard punching out hundreds of dots on each individual card.
We got married at The Common Man Inn in Plymouth, NH. I’m from northern NH and Jesse’s parents have a vacation home up there, although we both live in the Boston area now. All of our guests gave this place rave reviews! The Common Man is a chain of restaurants in NH, this inn/spa being their first. It had such a comfortable, rustic feel to it – everyone was so relaxed, it really felt like being at a luxury camp! We stayed in their signature suite called “Camp” complete with an antique canoe above the bed.
Jesse’s lovely cousin and my co-worker Gienna Shaw did all the photography. A photographist by hobby, I couldn’t have been more pleased with the results! We asked for a photo-journalism non-formal feel, and she definitely achieved that. I highly recommend getting to know your photographer beforehand, or better yet find a talented family member. I didn’t even realize she was there. Also, we have free reign to all 1,300+ photos!
I bought my wedding dress online from David’s Bridal about a month before the wedding. It was only $99! I didn’t really want something super traditional and definitely didn’t want to spend too much. Luckily Jesse’s mom is an excellent sewer/designer/seamstress and did all the alterations for me. The bolero is made of a nubby silk and made completely by her. I got my silver Rampage shoes from DSW for $11, and the jewelry was a gift from my mother. The girls wore fun green mod-inspired dresses from Nordstrom with brown shawls from Walmart (shh!) All the guys wore brown corderoy blazers from Old Navy, khakis, and white shirts from various places, and green ties from Etsy seller rabbitstop. My hair and makeup by me!
Two of Jesse’s good friends from high school just happen to be dj’s. We went through the generations, starting with classical for the ceremony, 40’s and big band for the cocktail hour/dinner, 60’s and 70’s for dancing, and all our current music for later in the evening.
I couldn’t resist the candy buffet trend for the favors. My mom and I bought various glass jars from a variety of stores – Michael’s, Walmart, Christmas Tree Shops, etc. The candy also came from lots of different places, and was quite the labor of love! I picked through many many bags of M&Ms and Skittles to get just the right colors. We bought little plastic bags and had my Dad write our names on every tiny piece of paper that was attached to a silver twist tie. It was a big hit.
I was so happy with all the flowers. We used huge spider mums for all the centerpieces as well as the bouquets. Scattered here and there were button mums, orchids, curly willow, and little green berries. The colors were so vibrant and the mums are just starting to wilt now. Flowers were done by Linda Hutchins, a family friend that owns Riff Flower Shop in Lancaster, NH.
The cake was done by Lori Shearer out of Lancaster, NH. It was beautiful, and boy did it taste good! All three layers were a spiced carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, with buttercream and fondant on the outside. Our cake topper is a handmade nest from Etsy seller Mosey. It really kicked off the whole theme of the wedding.
