From the bride:
The most important thing to us was that our wedding day to be true to our personal style, intimate for our guests, and fun as hell. We chose Brooklyn Winery because of the beautifully urban/rustic feel, the warmth of the small intimate rooms, and the incredible food – served family style to make our guests feel at home.

We wanted the ceremony to set the tone for the rest of the wedding, so we had our dear friend Kate perform it, with family members doing select readings. There was laughter, tears, an incredible amount of love… and ribbon wands waving like crazy.

I’m a DIY nerd when it comes to paper, and I wanted every piece of paper at the wedding to be DIY and make a statement – from the invitations to the place cards to the signs around the reception (my favorite was the bathroom sign, “You look oh so pretty… now get out there and dance!”). So I found a graphic print that was to die for and I went to town with it.

The day was everything we hoped it would be – romantic, full of personal touches, full of our closest family and friends – and most importantly, full of love.

Real wedding: Lynn-Kai + Clare

Its not every day I see a wedding held at a food park, but this one in San Francisco definitely caught my eye.  These two may not have been into dancing, but they sure know how to eat and have fun, turning their wedding into a veritable carnival with games, photobooths, and food trucks galore.

Real wedding: Ellen + Harold

black and white invitation suite

This wedding truly was a modern yet elegant affair with details to perfection.  I especially loved the whiskey favors, a nod to the groom’s bar in Williamsburg.  The best favors in my opinion are the ones that have some sort of relation back to the couple!

From the bride:

We wanted a modern, elegant, and comfortable New York wedding. Our wedding took place at the Wythe Hotel, which was the perfect venue for our modern and stylish look. We loved the industrial high ceilings and exposed brick in the main event hall. The venue has a lot of really unique artwork and details. Flower designer, Denise Fasanello, created gorgeous flower arrangements using lots of white and green flowers with pops of purple which went along with the modern décor. We had a fantastic DJ, Jay McElfresh, who was able to get all of our guests dancing. Sasithon Pooviriyakul was our amazing photographer for the wedding weekend. She was not only a positive addition to the day, but also her photographs showed that she understood the look, mood, and aesthetic that we had for our wedding.

Since the groom is one of the owners of Noorman’s Kil, a whisky bar in Williamsburg, we hand selected and bottled a single barrel of bourbon from Kings County Distillery for our wedding favors.

From the bride:

Adrian and I met in graduate school. He found my email from a classmate and sent me a message to compliment my home-made cassette tape necklace and big eye frames. I liked his glasses too. From the get-go, we’ve been tied together by our love for music, design, culture and eyewear. And so our wedding theme, That Perfect Pair was born.

For starters, we’re just not barn people. We wanted the wedding to be very “us”, which meant holding it in Brooklyn; the quirky, creative, and industrial borough that we’re proud to call home. The Greenpoint Loft was perfect: big windows, old wooden beams, and totally raw.  Our goals for this space were to incorporate the extraordinary talents of our amazing friends and family, to be budget-conscious in one of the most expensive cities in the world to have a wedding, AND — to make it one hell of a party.

We really wanted to include our friends without making them buy expensive bridal party attire. We called upon their artistic skills and expertise to do everything from installing our colorful decor and lights, to making our signature cocktail, photographing the wedding, and performing the ceremony. We even had a group of friends set up an animation station for those who needed a little break from the dance floor.

Since we live in the old Italian neighborhood of Carroll Gardens, we were able to ask one of our neighbors to let us borrow his yellow Cadillac for pictures. We were so honored to incorporate elements of our neighborhood and community.

I run my own small branding agency and decided to make all of the invitations and programs. Adrian and I ‘paired up’ on each of the other tasks; from purchasing the tableware, to folding every napkin, to painting each of our centerpieces. We created a lounge using our own furniture (with the exception of a beautiful Patina Rentals loveseat) and even drove the U-Haul with our tables and chairs. It was a lot of work, but ultimately such a personal experience that we wouldn’t have had it any other way.

The best moment for us was when Uncle Stanley and friends performed a Stevie Wonder medley. Adrian and I couldn’t decide on which song we wanted, and thankfully, these pros were able to work with our DJ to bust out one of the best performances I’ve seen in a long time. Music is such an integral part of our lives, and to have our friends and family put together such a moment was something we’ll never forget.

From the photographer:

Brooke and Josh originally met in 2009, but after a few dates, a relationship failed to materialize and they lost contact. Two years later, the couple met again and it was love-at-second-sight. They’ve been inseparable ever since, even after Josh took off for grad school in DC, then to Iowa for political work.

After Brooke finished her PhD at Columbia in spring 2014, she was offered a position at UCSD, and the couple decided to get hitched on the East Coast before making the move to California. Of course, with school recently finished and their move upcoming, these Brooklynites wanted to keep expenses to a minimum and put together a DIY wedding in NYC for under $4000! The critics said it couldn’t be done, but Brooke and Josh don’t listen to critics. They managed to pull off the wedding under budget, and even composed their own kickass ceremony from scratch.

On August 9th, they held a 50 person ceremony and reception in Greenpoint, Brooklyn at Troost, a hip little cafe with a beautiful backyard garden. Flowers and place settings were prepared by Brooke.
